Phuket without the clichés: islands, temples and the quiet north
Phuket has long outgrown the beach-and-cocktail reputation. Buddhist temples overlooking the sea, fishing villages in the north, kayaking through mangroves — all within 10 minutes of the busiest resort strip.
Most tourists come to Phuket for Patong — and stay there. But those who drive 20 km north find a different island: Phuket Town with its Portuguese mansions, Taling Chan floating market and Mai Khao beach where sea turtles nest and there is not a single sun lounger for hire.
Phuket Town: architecture and markets
Sino-Portuguese architecture from the 19th century — colourful facades, galleries and cafés in former trading houses. Phuket Town is UNESCO-listed as a 'Historic Town'. Thalang Road is the main arts cluster: local watercolours from 200–600 baht, independent bars in side alleys. On Sundays — Walking Street with street food, live music and pottery makers.
Wat Chalong — Phuket's largest Buddhist temple, 29 buildings, relics of two monk heroes. Free entry. Wat Phra Thong — a temple with a half-buried golden Buddha: legend says anyone who tried to dig it up perished. Come at 7am — monks chant their morning prayers and you can request a blessing.
Beaches: from busy to wild
Nai Harn in the south — the calmest of the popular ones: Thai families swim here in the mornings. Bang Tao in the north: 8 km of beach with dunes, two hotel rows and a lagoon for kitesurfing. Mai Khao — the northernmost, 11 km undeveloped: sea turtles nest here November–February.
Phang Nga Bay and the islands
Phang Nga Bay, 40 minutes away: vertical limestone cliffs, James Bond Island (Koh Tapu), caves containing Buddhist altars. Full-day kayak tour from ₽3,500. Book the early 7:00 departure — before the big speedboats arrive.
- Koh Phi Phi. 2 hours by speedboat. Best snorkelling at Loh Samah Bay. Stay overnight — after 6pm the island empties completely.
- Koh Yao Noi. 45 minutes by longtail. Village with no cars, a crab farm, a hotel overlooking Phang Nga. For those who need complete silence.
- Similan Islands. 3 hours by speedboat, open November–May. Best diving in Thailand: visibility up to 30m, mantas and whale sharks.
Food and cooking classes
Chillva Market in Phuket Town (Tue–Sun evenings) — best Thai street food without the tourist markup: tom yum for 60 baht, fried rice for 50. Phuket Lakkmuang restaurant, 50 years in business, local Phuket cuisine (different from standard Thai): Muslim curry, hoy tod (oysters in egg batter). Cooking classes from 1,500 baht (~₽3,700): 3 hours — market visit, cooking, lunch. Top schools: Mom Tri's and Blue Elephant.
When to go and how to get there
Best season: November–March — no monsoon, clear water, turtles at Mai Khao. April–October: low season, hotels half price, but larger waves. May–June is the wettest. Direct flight from Moscow SVO → HKT, around 10 hours.
